The Miracle Man!
Author: Dr. John Hinwood
PRESS RELEASE]
Chiropractor Dr John Hinwood has been giving out a small white card to everyone he meets for the last 40 years. He estimates that in that time he’s given away 50,000 of them.
The cards have just three words… “Expect a miracle!”
In his just released book You Can Expect a Miracle Hinwood explains that too many people go through life expecting the worst. He’s found that, when people expect something good, there’s a fair chance that they’ll get it.
He knows it works because he’s had personal experiences of miracles happening. He cites as an example, “In 1972 we were hijacked in the Congo at gun point and a miracle kept us alive.”
He adds, “Several weeks later, nearing the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro we were trapped in a freak blizzard wearing only light clothing. Instead of being frozen to death, a miracle event saved us until the blizzard past”.
Asked how many miracles he has seen or heard about, Dr Hinwood says, “It must be thousands. It’s amazing. Once you start to champion something, you become a magnet for them. People find you just to share the miracles that have happened to them”.
Hinwood say there is definitely a way to improve your chances of getting a miracle when you need them. In his book he gives 13 tips to help make miracles happen.

Author: Dr. John Hinwood
SCOTT: Hi. Welcome to “Talking with Giants!” radio network. This is your host, Scott Schilling, and I want to thank you for joining us for what lends itself to be another fabulous interview with a true servant leader on our internet radio show. I want to thank all of you who have tuned in to our earlier shows as well as those listening to this show. We appreciate you being part of the “Talking with Giants!” radio network. Get ready to take some notes, have some fun, and listen to the wisdom of an amazing mentor and a chiropractor with a cause I have the honor to call a friend. Today we’re very fortunate to have with us a very special guest Dr. John Hinwood. John is an author, international speaker, mentor, coach, and consultant to professionals worldwide. He is the CEO and principal mentor at The Center for Powerful Practices, which he founded with his wife, Judy, in 1991. With an extensive client base worldwide, he publishes a weekly newsletter called Practice Pointers which is delivered to over 20,000 practitioners around the world. He has published numerous books and multimedia packages which are available through his Web site, www.powerful-practices.com. One of John’s projects that I’m blessed to be part of is www.expect-a-miracle.net, an exciting Web site he launched in November 2007 that is a huge storehouse of amazing stories of miracles that have positively impacted people’s lives. The stories are spreading positive messages and expectancy to people around the world. His latest book, You Can… Expect a Miracle, was recently released worldwide. As an award-winning chiropractor and international speaker, John inspires his audience into taking practical action steps to move their lives to new levels. His perspectives, humor, observations, insights into life, and entertaining stories are from the heart and they inspire and motivate people into taking positive action steps. John, it’s really wonderful to have you join us here today.
JOHN: Thanks, Scott for inviting me to share my life with you and your audience.
SCOTT: You have so many exciting things going on these days. Could you share with us what you’re most passionate about in your work?
JOHN: What I’m most passionate about is living my purpose. And often, I think, people struggle to find passion in their lives because they’ve never really articulated what their life’s purpose is.
SCOTT: That’s great information, because I really think that’s putting your finger on the pulse of what it truly takes to be successful. Is that correct?
JOHN: Absolutely. Your life’s purpose is what it is that gets you up in the morning. Why do you get out of bed in the morning? Now for me, it’s very simple – through caring, to raise the quality of life and health of humanity. That’s simple.
SCOTT: That is pretty simple. You know, John, you’re a huge success in so many areas including speaking and writing and coaching. Because of what you’ve accomplished and where you are today, what would you tell others to encourage them today, regardless of where they are in their lives?
JOHN: Scott, that’s an interesting question because out there people don’t really care how much you know until they know how much you care. Everybody wants to be cared for. Everybody wants to be nurtured. Everybody wants a helping hand at some time in their life. Even the most positive people, people who are making it happen, they still have needs and wants to be cared for. I think when we recognize that and we can put that to play every day in our own lives, then it’s amazing what happens because coming from Down Under, as you can already tell from my voice, we have a very special tool the aboriginals designed. It’s called a boomerang. Because when you saw a boomerang, it comes back to you, so if you’re putting out there and serving and helping others, it comes back to you and people serve and assist you. You don’t have to ask for it. It naturally happens.
SCOTT: That’s awesome. That’s powerful. You know, John, everyone has had a defining moment or experience that inspired them to probably change and improve their lives. Please share your story. Tell us about your defining moment and what it has meant to you in your life.
JOHN: Scott, I’ve had many, many defining moments. To put it down to one, that’s difficult because at each stage in my journey in my 61 years on this planet, there have been continual defining moments that have come up. I don’t even know who had said this once, but they said, “If you choose to live on the edge, then you just attract more of these defining moments.” I can remember, at age three, when I started to walk at about two and a half, I had real trouble. If I went to run at all, I just fell flat on the face. I was taken to the family doctor who said, “This boy is exceptionally knock-kneed.” Back in the late forties, knock-knees were seen as a disease, an orthopedic disease. And people who had knock-knees were looked at as being people who’d be almost cripples or cripples or into a wheelchair. I remember age three, my parents took me to Dr. Hugh Berry (ph), the finest orthopedic surgeon in Sidney where I was brought up. And I heard the great man pronounce to my parents, “This boy is so knock-kneed that within two or three years, he’ll probably be in a wheelchair. But what we can do and the only thing we can do is he’s going to have to wear these very big built-up boots over time. He can never go barefoot. And every evening, you’re going to have to put these iron splints onto his legs and he has to sleep in them.” That happened over the next two years. When I heard Dr. Hugh Berry (ph) say that, something went on inside me. My father at that time was a sporting editor at the Sidney Daily Mirror, the largest Sidney newspaper, [Inaudible 00:06:27] had blamed his life. Both my parents were very active people. They played tennis. They participated in sports. To think that they had a boy who was going to be disabled, I knew, would be extremely difficult for them, even at age three. And all I knew was my parents showed that anyway. That was just an inherent feeling I had back then. I suppose at that point in time, my defining moment was, as Nike says, “Just do it.” It wasn’t about trying, it was just do it.
SCOTT: That’s awesome. How did you turn that defining moment into your true passion?
JOHN: I made a decision I would only ever accept victory in my life. If I received a “no” answer, I just hadn’t asked the best question yet. That’s how I’ve come to understand that later in life. I’ve also come to understand it as something that I’ve worked with with every client, every person I mentor or I coach. All the coaches in our organization, we all live by above and below the line of principle, in that above the line is being a victor where you must be involved and you must be accountable. It’s somewhere where you’re productive and you’re energy-producing. You have ownership to what it is you do. You accept responsibility and the outcome of this is results, positive results. Most people, often in life, live the life of a victim. It’s consuming and energy depleting. They’re into blame, they’re into denial, they’re into excuses and they’re into reasons. So really in life, there’s only two things. It’s either reasons or results.
SCOTT: Your own miracle put you into the “expect a miracle” concept today.
JOHN: Absolutely. And if you want results, then you have to set about and create them. Just one thing to aid your start. My wife and I also made a decision, a choice, and also we’ve taught our children this. And again, it’s something that we work in our mentor and coach with clients on, is to remove the word “try” from you language. As Bob Parker said, you know, “Try is fighting (ph) with honor.” It’s not something you choose to do. You either do it or you don’t do it. And also, removing the word “should” because “should” is actually a judgment word. So if that word ever appears, it just doesn’t get out of my mouth it gets swallowed and disappears. And in that way, you can expect miracles over time. They’re possible.
SCOTT: Absolutely true. You know, you’re an amazing role model for others. It’s evident that you look both between the lines and dig underneath the message in so many different things you do. Many people don’t realize that a major key – if not one of the biggest keys – to their own prosperity is having a servant-leadership attitude or a mindset that is giving to others. Is that consistent with your vision for “Expect a Miracle”?
JOHN: It absolutely is. I see that every time you look between the lines or dig underneath the message, there’s something else there. Miracles are amazing things because they appear and happen in peoples’ lives sometimes, and they don’t even recognize them. They’re so busy looking for the mountain they miss a small miracle that can be a lynchpin to create something major in their lives.
SCOTT: That almost comes out of gratitude, doesn’t it?
JOHN: Absolutely, and having something that I would call “colonial ingenuity.” As my great friend Charles “Tremendous” Jones says, you know, “Australia and America are very, very similar countries.” As Charlie said, “The interesting thing with the US is it was settled by wonderful people, it was run by criminals, whereas Australia was settled by criminals and run by wonderful people.” I wouldn’t necessarily agree with Charles on that, but his humor is wonderful. I believe that looking at ingenuity and looking at another way to do things is a huge secret to life success.
SCOTT: What advice, John, would you give everyone on how to create their very best day possible?
JOHN: To create your very best day, I believe first of all, as I’ve said, you need to understand what your purpose is to start with. You need to have it articulated, written down, your vision and your mission for life. And also have your values…I have it here with me all the time. I read them everyday numerous times, my top 10 values that I live by. And every morning, before I start…as I did this morning before I went and exercised, I have 16 affirmations. And I know those affirmations absolutely, but I still read them every day. And that sets me up to having an outstanding day every day. And when things come along that create something that, too many people, could be a downer or a negative, I’m already prepared mentally, emotionally, and spiritually to handle those things.
SCOTT: That really is another one of those major keys to living your best life possible, isn’t it.
JOHN: Absolutely. And my 16th affirmation was one that I penned after reading one of Wayne Dyer’s great books and it says, “Good morning. This is God. I’ll be handling all your problems today. I’ll not need your help. So have a miraculous day.”
SCOTT: That’s awesome. Oh, I love that one. I want to add that to my repertoire as well. John, on our individual paths to success we all experience bumps in the road or even complete failure from time to time. I haven’t really met anybody who hasn’t experienced some kind of issue. These bumps confront all of us at one time or another. Have you experienced failure in your life? How has it strengthened you to reach that success? How have you overcome that adversity?
JOHN: I’ve experienced lots and lots of failure. I can remember a situation. My wife and I were married for 18 years and never had any children. It just never happened. And in 1995, we went from Australia to Chile and we adopted three children – all the children because no one wants all the children. They only want babies in Chile to adopt them. We adopted 7 1/2 and 9-year-old boys and a 10 1/2 year-old girl, so our family had always been split up. The boys were elective mute (ph) and our daughter was just out there, massively extroverted in order to protect herself. We brought the family back together again. I saw our great friend Charles “Tremendous” Jones in Australia speaking with the late great Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and we’re fortunate that Charlie said, “Look, Dr. Peale and Mrs. Peale would like to have breakfast with you and the children.” It was only after three months after we had them. So we’re at the Mayfair Cross (ph) Hotel in Brisbane having breakfast, and here’s this mighty man Norman Vincent Peale sitting opposite me, one of my mentors in life. And he looked at me and he said, “John, do you have any problems in your life, my boy?” And I said, “Yeah, I have lots of them, Dr. Peale.” And he said, “Well, that’s good, my boy. ‘Cause if you didn’t have problems, I would’ve got down on my knees and prayed to the Lord, ‘Give this man problems,’ because without problems, you don’t grow.” And it was amazing.
SCOTT: Absolutely.
JOHN: He said this and there may have been 200 people in that restaurant for breakfast, and you could’ve heard a pin drop. Everybody just had, you know, realized there was a guru here, there was a master, there was somebody speaking in that room.
SCOTT: Wow, that’s powerful. What great mentors. Isn’t it amazing that no matter who you are or what you are, there are always mentors and people that can teach you and give you some wisdom if you simply open yourself up to it?
JOHN: Always. Zig Ziglar’s someone whom I’ve heard speaking at times, I read all his books, I just love his message. He says, “If you understand what your true purpose is in life, then you’ll live your life as a manifold (ph) specific.” Because he says most people live their lives as wandering generalities. They don’t hone in on anything other than burning enough money to put food on the table, transportation, some entertainment, maybe a holiday now and then, and that’s it. And they’re envious of others. When they became a manifold (ph) specific, they can really have anything they wanted.
SCOTT: Again, extremely powerful. No doubt about that fact. Are there any other processes or exercises that you recommend that our listeners do right now, each morning to improve the quality of their life?
JOHN: My wife and I have always been very big on our children in goal-setting. I’m doing this recording with you from Chicago today. My wife and I have been here for a week and we just completed a book called My Lifebook, which is a four-day program on goal-setting and we just love the program. With the area of goal-setting, they say that only 5% of people actually set goals. And out of that, probably only 2% actually write them down and read them on a daily or bi-daily or weekly basis. In my portfolio that I carry with me here, I’ve got a folder that has got my goals set in the seven areas of personal, self, relationship, family, health, fitness, wellness, vacation, career, financial freedom, wealth creation, education, and spiritual. And inside that, I’ve got these reasonable Post-it notes with individual goals written on them and timeframes in which they’ll be achieved. Having used this method for many, many years, I’ve seen some amazing things happen in my life as a result of actually articulating, writing down, and then reading what it is I want to happen. The other thing that we do and we’ve done there for 20 years – and I have one of these in my diary in a quarter size and also on a large poster board on the notice board that’s to my left in my desk in my office and that’s what we call a “life map” or a “treasure map,” where we cut out from magazines, newspapers, all sorts of places, some amazing photographs and some amazing statements of things that we want to happen in our lives in the future. Now, these “treasure maps” or “life maps” normally take me five to seven years to complete. We [Inaudible 00:16:35] things out of them and then we start on a new one. It’s wonderful to see these beautiful things there. Something happened two weeks ago. And the area that my life has expanded into now is doing property development in age care for people over 55, all the baby boomers who now want to move into some resort-style life accommodation and then age there so they can live in a universal apartment or universal townhouse or villa that they can stay there and it’s built for wheelchair access, the whole range of things, and they can pass on there if they wish. And in rural areas of Australia, there is none of this. And there’s a particular area in Australia I’m involved with some colleagues in and doing some development there. And I just finalized a major development on 206 acres and finalizing the purchase of land. On the “treasure map” that I did back in 1995, there’s only one thing that didn’t come out. Within the seven years, I started a new one. And that particular thing that didn’t come out said that there was a 6 million-dollar deal and it was a team effort with the support of others. One of my investors called me and a text in a book that my wife and I sell from [Inaudible 00:17:52] Web site called Insights into Life. And he said, “John, go to page 67 of the book and have a look at our ‘treasure map’ there.” And here was that statement that didn’t come out in that time, but here it is now 13 years later has manifested. That “treasure map” is probably completed. It was at 98% complete.
SCOTT: Listening here in the studio looking at my “treasure map” right in front of my eyes, and you just really encourage me even look at it closer and see where we are with everything as well. These points that you make are so valuable. I would recommend everybody that’s listening to this show, listen to it again and again. This is truly powerful information. Again, I want to thank you for tuning in. You’re very special to us. We’re looking forward to building a long lasting relationship through giving you quality programming, the experts that you want to learn from to help you further your life. John is a chiropractor with a cause, an author, international speaker, mentor, coach, and consultant to professionals worldwide. He is the CEO and principal mentor at the Center for Powerful Practices, and has published numerous books and multimedia packages. His latest book, You Can… Expect a Miracle, has recently been released worldwide. John, you are an amazing spirit. Welcome back and thank you for sharing some additional time together on the “Talking with Giants!” radio network.
JOHN: Thanks, Scott. The book is with the publisher now. It will be available on Amazon, in the bookstores. It will be available out there in late July. It was meant to be out in early June, but as most things with publishers, there’s been a few things that have been put behind a wee bit. Next month, the book will be available.
SCOTT: Well, we know it’s going to be amazingly successful when the people have the opportunity to read these wonderful stories about all these miracles worldwide. And I’m very proud to have story in there myself. Thank you for including me in that project.
JOHN: Scott, that’s an amazing little story in itself. In Australia, we have very, very few African-Americans. You would rarely see one, and we’ve just engaged the services of an outstanding new computer IT tech person for our company. He came into my office recently, on the first time he was there, and I had up in my screen your story and the photograph my Webmaster went into archives and found of you in your great football pose (Overlay).
SCOTT: Many years ago at this point.
JOHN: And he looked at it and said, “That’s Scot Schilling. He’s a Buckeye.” And I said, “How do you know that?” And he said, “I am a Buckeye fan, man.” And here he is, distant in Australia where a handful of African-American are, he walks in my office, here’s a picture my Webmaster hunted out of archives. Just through reading your story, and he has your photograph out there. That is amazing stuff.
SCOTT: It’s pretty funny. The internet is a wonderful place. There’s no doubt about that. (Overlay).
JOHN: There’s no doubt anywhere, Scott.
SCOTT: How do you stay motivated and so positive?
JOHN: Again, it goes back to, I really understand what my purpose in life is. I know why I get out of bed every morning. And then that way, I don’t have to motivate myself. I’m pre-motivated before I get up.
SCOTT: I agree with you totally. If you had to wrap up the wisdom of your life into one page to leave as a legacy, what information would you want to pass on to others?
JOHN: You know, I like my tombstone to say, “Here lies a man who cares.” And I know through caring for others as being my primary source of my existence here on this planet means, as I said earlier, that that boomerang affects the course. And I’m so fortunate I have certain people all over the world who care for me. We arrived here in Chicago last Monday evening and a colleague of mine in Australia, another chiropractor, we care for each other and he’s a Chicago boy. He was brought up here before he went off to university and college and eventually found his way with his family and he practiced in Australia now. He lived in the most idyllic place in the subtropics on the beach, he’s quite close to me. And he said, “You have to go to a White Sox game.” So he called a client of his who is in charge of ticketing for the White Sox and he and I were in a private box on Tuesday evening watching an outstanding game. He’s someone who loved and cared for us, and it was a lap of luxury. And I know the other to England from here, and students find me [Inaudible 00:23:28] you’re paying college chiropractors. He heard I was going to be just passing through London and asked, “Can you come speak with the students on a couple of evenings?” So I said, “Yes.” And I’ve been treated royally there. It’s just amazing what comes back to you. One of my sons was in London and he was in this beautiful partner there. He was going to visit some friends in southern Denmark and go sailing on a boat. Again, there were some friends who came and stayed with us at Christmas time when we were there. Life is a wonderful joy of give and return. And when you go out there and give, it’s amazing what comes back. You never seek it. It just comes back and finds you.
SCOTT: You know, that’s absolutely true. I remember the first day that we met personally. You were so open and so warm and so caring. It became really easy to approach you and want to offer assistance to you, just get to know you. With that, the result of this interview and so many other things that we’ll do together, it’s just really amazing that when you open yourself up and give in advance, how wonderful the return becomes.
JOHN: Absolutely. It’s one of those things that just happens. My great friend Charlie “Tremendous” Jones who unfortunately has very advanced cancer now, his wife is coming to an [Inaudible 00:24:41] here and he and his beautiful wife Gloria came to Australia on a brief holiday and we had a very special time together. Charlie is passing on, I see he’s in that phase of his life, but he had numerous libraries in the United States named after him. He has received two honoree chiropractic doctorate degrees, although he’s not a chiropractor. He has just been a massively friendly chiropractic professional. Over the last 40 years, Charlie has so many honors that are being bestowed on him. His major premise in life is that the only thing that makes you different today than you were yesterday is the people you meet and the books you read. And through executivebooks.com – it’s a fabulous Web site, you may like to go there – he sells books at very, very discounted prices from some of the most outstanding authors in the world, about positive expectancy, about better ways to lead your life. Charlie has been a true mentor. He was the one who pushed me to write the book You Can…Expect a Miracle based on the fact that he knows I’ve handed out over 50,000 Expect a Miracle cards with only the words “Expect a Miracle” on them over the last 20 years. And there has been some truly amazing stories that have come true by handing those cards out. There are some of them totally heartfelt, life sighting, and some massively humorous, absolutely. You’re going to sore gut from laughing when you read them.
SCOTT: You inspired me to print those cards as well and I’ve created the habit of handing them out as well. And it’s really amazing what a little white card that simply says “Expect a Miracle” can do in somebody’s life. We all know that positive expectancy can change lives. Will you share a personal story of someone who has inspired you and really made a difference in your life?
JOHN: My mother. My mother was a beautiful woman. My mother brought me up in that for her, me being on this planet was something that…she’d had six miscarriages. I was born in 1946, right after the war, and she had been trying for…during the war, my father was away in another part of Australia and he came home on leave and they’d attempt to have another child and she just continued not to be able to hold them in. And eventually, with me, the war was finished, my father was back home and she could rest. And from the sixth month on to the ninth month, she had to rest and have a pestle (ph) inserted into her vagina to keep the cervix jammed shut so she could then finally deliver, which she did. And she was just a beautiful soul. What she taught me was anything could happen. After I went to start in school, my mother went out. And she had no formal training. She worked as a self-taught bookkeeper after leaving school at 15. She bought a delicatessen which was bankrupt and she built that up to be an amazing business before she sold it. And my mother is probably the first person in Australia with fast food, I believe. The only fast food available back in the early, early fifties when she started this business was fish ‘n chips. What she did, she used to buy rabbits and she used to cook rabbits in a pressure cooker and then she would take those rabbits and put them in the oven and bake them for 30 minutes. And rabbit, in those days…well, rabbit now still tastes like chicken. Rabbits are a wonderful source of protein in food. And people, on their way home, would come and buy a cooked rabbit like you go and buy a barbecued chicken. Back in those days in Australia, you only ever have chicken at Christmas and Easter. It was very expensive. And most people wouldn’t have roasted chicken, they only have a boiling chicken where that’s what it was. They’d be boiled in a pot and then you’d have hot boiled chicken. Here she has these rabbits. People would come from miles around to get these rabbits. She sold that business and then bought a sandwich bar business and again one that was virtually bankrupt, and then built it up and then she went into a card business. And everything was loving service, my first stake make (ph). And then she also had taught me that money is a byproduct of services rendered.
SCOTT: Now, that’s a gem there in itself.
JOHN: She would offer fantastic service. And then, back when I was in chiropractic college, I was fortunately [Inaudible 00:29:17] the late George W. Parker from Fort Worth, Texas who ran the Parker seminars. And Dr. Parker, two of his major teams were Loving Service, my first stake make (ph) and money is a byproduct of services rendered to the patient. And it was amazing. And in the card shop she had, I remember, that she would go out of her way to read the verses to elderly people who couldn’t read. She loved Helen Steiner Rice cards. She loved cards that had a meaning and a particular verse. To her, you only gave a card if the verse was appropriate for the person you are giving it to.
SCOTT: Again, so much powerful information. You know, John, everyone has ideas on how to improve their lives, whether it be through a new job, a move to a new city, finding love, but change can be pretty scary at times. Can you please share an experience with us where you kind of stepped off the ledge with only faith and took that big risk based on your belief that you would absolutely succeed?
JOHN: My wife and I, Judy (ph) have taken lots of those leaps. For seven years, we were high school teachers and we left for Australia in 1969 and traveled over land through Asia, through some eastern blocked countries. It was very difficult in the beginning in Cold War time. In Europe, we lived and worked in Europe, too, in the UK and did some work in Denmark and I bought a Land Rover and I drove from London to Durban in South Africa and had some amazing experiences in Africa. And then, we moved to South America and traveled extensively all over Latin America by public transport, into the Caribbean and then immigrated to Canada from there to study chiropractics. Along the line, there were many, many. Maybe something…in very recent times, in 1996, we had a beautiful four-story home right on the ocean, on a cliff overlooking the ocean. We had a cyclone for a week and we built a water lake, and I climbed up onto the roof, much to my wife not wanting to do it, I had to check out what was happening. And a gust of wind, which was estimated as quite close to 200K is peaking up and forcing me through our roof deck and I fractured my spine, I fractured my shoulder. And what it did, it totally discombobulated my nervous system. We have the widening part of all the nerves that run down through your spinal cord and out the body. We also have the neural polypeptide part that moves around in your immune system. And that part got totally thrown out. I ended up having five months off. We had to close our management company down for a period of time. And I then went back and practiced for eight months a couple of days a week of extremely busy construction in. And then just have to take a couple of years off traveling, just enabling my body to heal and get balanced again. In that whole process, I was sitting on beaches, camping in the bush and doing all sorts of things out of the beautiful project of Sydney 2000 Olympics, including the National Friendship Park because beside an Olympic series, there has never ever been a party. It has always been just straight the Olympics. And a great friend of mine who’d been involved in all of the Olympic development in Australia knew what I was doing and talked to the so-called Sidney organizing committee for the Olympics and also the National Olympic [Inaudible 00:32:34] IRC about my project. They flew me to Sidney, they looked at what I’ve done. I had beautiful art boards done up. And there was like a world expo that would run beside it. They said, “Let’s go.” And I put together a phenomenal team of expert people, incredible group of people, and this was an event that was just going to be major transformation in the Olympic movement. I had Coke, IBM, Kodak, all the big players chasing me for corporate villas and everything was roaring ahead with this until it became so successful that the IRC had massive fear that it could overtake the Olympic movement and what people saw as the Olympics and canned it. It was tying me up, we have to finish up over night.
SCOTT: The events in your life have really caused you to just kind of get retrospective and think of something new and exciting.
JOHN: It was a 140-million-dollar project, big project. And to that point in time, all the development phase my wife and I [Inaudible 00:33:28] very kind to us, [Inaudible 00:33:31] very kind to us, we put everything we had into that project. And we just had to walk away. We had to start from scratch again. It was amazing, we were leaving, driving out of Sydney, heading back to where…in the subtropics and two people phoned me in ten minutes and said, “I need you to coach me.” I said, “Okay.” We’re back in line again.
SCOTT: Amazing.
JOHN: Then we just started from scratch. It’s three years ago now. We went and rented a home on a mountaintop so I’d have consulting, and a beautiful place in the bush to help somebody out to [Inaudible 00:34:08] tenants. You know, it was a beautiful home with whirlwind wind and I had a dream, and I never dream. This dream was I saw this beautiful home on the beach. I knew the area, but I haven’t been there for many years. I said to Judy, “We need…after six years now of renting this property, we need to go and buy a property again and move.” And she said, “Fine.” So we went down and we searched and searched and searched [Inaudible 00:34:29] place where you can run retreats from and things from on the ocean. Three months after we moved, the house we’ve been living on in the mountain burned to the ground in 15 minutes. But now if I get a feeling, I never dream, I get a picture of something, it’s time to go. The other interesting thing was my wife and I still later just finished paying off all the debt we’d accumulated as well with some of the Olympic project and we saw the contract for $1.6 million on this house and we had to go and buy the 18,000 deposit. But we arranged and 18-month settlement, so then we had to create something that would bring about 1.6 million in 18 months to settle our property.
SCOTT: Wow.
JOHN: Then I became involved in some property development which I have been involved with, investing with someone years before and that person came back into my life again. I saw the aged care people needed a huge amount of help and I started a project and that generated the income to settle this property.
SCOTT: Absolutely amazing.
JOHN: You step out there and you go to the edge, it’s amazing what can come to support you. You can take the actions there.
SCOTT: I’m sure there are going to be people who really want to get a hold of you. Could you mention to our listeners how they can help you out with the Expect a Miracle movement and the experienced benefits of what you’re doing?
JOHN: We’re going to mount a massive campaign in the launching of this book by Amazon. And I’ve already spoken to numerous people who have some amazing e-books which they would be prepared to offer as a gift. And there’s going to be a particular day that we’ll nominate, and if you go to Amazon and purchase a book on Amazon on that day, my goal would be to create a record number of sales in one day on Amazon to really project the book because there are so many outstanding stories in the book that can help so many people. It’s a book that you put beside your bed, that you can pick out in a time when you’re feeling a little bit down for a great story or read. Dr. John [Inaudible 00:36:34] also have sold many books, particularly Count Your Blessings. He says, “This book will be a great source of inspiration to continually bring miracles into your life.” And [Inaudible 00:36:45] who’s the author of the massively successful Chicken Soup for the Soul book says, “I only have three words for this book – I loved it.” And I’d love help from the listeners here who I know the book will help you but will help so many others. It will help…and I’ll be offering major discounts on the book if they buy in 100 lots because I know there are people out there who are in business, who a book like this can support the people who work on their team. Another appeal we’re involved in MLM groups who need to support their down line people, a book like this can help easily. So we’re going to be going to a very major marketing campaign shortly. You go to our Expect a Miracle Web site which is www.expect-a-miracle.net and you can post your story there. Every person who posts a story each week, we have a readers’ choice and that person will receive three copies of the book once it’s published. And there’s a readers’ choice story of the year. And the person who wins that will get a round-the-world trip for two as being the readers’ choice story of the year. The beautiful stories are being posted. I can see they are going to be further books on more miracles coming through the amazing stories that are being posted there. If you would like to be on our mailing list to know about the campaign we’ll be running for the sale of the book and for you to get so many other wonderful things, if you email me at johnh@expect-a-miracle.net, I’ll add you to my list and let you know.
SCOTT: Fabulous, John. Thank you so much. Is there anything else you’d like to share with us before we sign off?
JOHN: Yes, there is one thing. To me, probably the best miracle I have is my most beautiful wife I’ve been married to for 41 years and my three beautiful children who just inspire me, and two beautiful grandsons now who also inspire me, and I think having family around you, such supportive people, is a huge part of our success and it’s a real miracle to have these people with us. And if we haven’t got family at this point in time, the family we have come from, the connection there is wonderful, of course, great friends. And of course great friends are people who just love to be on the wavelength and just love to share the things that we all share together.
SCOTT: Fabulous. John, thank you so much. That’s our time that we have for our show today. I want to thank our special guest, Dr. John Hinwood. John, it’s been a real honor interviewing you today. Dr John Hinwood speaks at Perth this Friday, 20 March, about Developing Relationships Based Practice to Doctors of Chiropractic.
For the past 21 years Australian chiropractor and author, Dr John Hinwood has been handing out a small white card to almost everyone he has met.
The card has just three words written on it: “Expect a Miracle”. Last Christmas marked the 21st anniversary of his crusade. He estimates he has handed out almost 70,000 cards.
The 62-year-old’s crusade to change people’s lives comes from observations through his chiropractic practice and coaching business that people go through life expecting the worst, create what they believe and miss out on opportunities.
He believes at least 70% of people’s healing comes from the placebo effect. The simple act of handing out a little card with EXPECT A MIRACLE written on it helps release endorphins in those who receive it.
“Henry David Thoreau said most people lead lives of quiet desperation. They want more from life but don’t know how to get it. People need to believe they are worthy of a miracle and that miracles large and small can happen to any one of us at any time,” says Dr Hinwood.
John and wife, Judy were awarded the International Humanitarian Award from the prestigious Parker Seminars of Dallas, Texas USA this year. Judy is also a chiropractor and the Hinwoods live in NSW but speak throughout the world.

The Australian edition of John’s book, You Can Expect A Miracle has just been released. In it are chronicled extraordinary, believe-it-or-not miracles that those who have received his cards have experienced.

He overcame his learning difficulties, won a scholarship, completed a Doctor of Chiropractic and went on to establish one of Australia’s most successful chiropractic practices.
In his personal life he adopted three older illiterate children from Chile in 1985. The children are all in 30s now and 1998 the Hinwoods returned to Chile and found their biological family including their separated parents.

Life begins and ends with miracles
Author: Dr. John Hinwood
Media release
Australian chiropractor Dr John Hinwood has an unusual way of changing people’s lives.
For the past 21 years the 62-year-old Casuarina Beach (NSW) resident has been handing out a small white card to almost everyone he has met. The card has just three words written on it: “Expect a Miracle”
Dr Hinwood’s story is similar to that of Arthur Stace, a recovering alcoholic and born-again Christian who spent 40 years writing the word “Eternity” all over the streets of Sydney to prompt people to think about eternity and their own mortality.
The difference is Dr Hinwood is prompting people to think about their own miracles; the small seemingly insignificant events and moments in people’s lives that open the doors to a sense of wonderment and opportunity.
Last Christmas marked the 21st anniversary of his crusade. He estimates he has handed out almost 70,000 cards to people from all over the world. Dr Hinwood is an international speaker and regularly presents to chiropractors and other practitioners all over the world on the importance of love, care and compassion in the healing process.
He once stood in the foyer of the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel acting as a “love magnet” and handing out Expect a Miracle cards which instantly saw a large queue form, before security moved him on.
Dr Hinwood has lived his own personal miracle. He suffered dyslexia as a child but overcame his learning difficulties, won a scholarship, completed a Doctor of Chiropractic and established a successful chiropractic practice.
He adopted three older illiterate children from Chile in 1985. In 1998 the Hinwood family returned to Chile and found their kids’ biological parents.
Last year Dr Hinwood and chiropractor wife, Judy were awarded the International Humanitarian Award from the Parker Seminars of Dallas, Texas USA for their “unselfishly helping others around the world”.
The Australian edition of Dr Hinwood’s book, You Can Expect A Miracle has just been released. In it are chronicled extraordinary, believe-it-or-not miracles experienced by those who have received his cards.
“Henry David Thoreau said most people lead lives of quiet desperation. People need to believe they are worthy of a miracle because that thought alone can change a life,” says Dr Hinwood.

The miracle of endorphins
Author: Dr. John Hinwood
Media release

Visit: www.expectamiracle.com
Endorphins are the chemicals produced naturally by the body that decrease stress hormones.
They are the body’s natural feel good chemicals, and when they are released through exercise, your mood is boosted naturally.
During exercise, these endorphins are released, and this can produce feelings of euphoria and a general state of wellbeing. The endorphins produced can be so powerful that they actually mask pain.
Physically active people recover from mild depression more quickly and physical activity is strongly correlated with good mental health as people age.
Smiling and laughter are also activities that produce the release of endorphins in the body. A movie, a good joke, a book with fun stories or leading a life where you smile a lot produces a good supply of endorphins that enhance your health.
Australian Chiropractor, Dr John Hinwood, is a strong supporter of the power of the body’s natural capacity to heal itself.
For the past 21 years Dr Hinwood has been on a mission to educate everyone he meets about the power of expectation around mental, emotional, spiritual and physical health.
The thinking goes like this: most of us in our various lives are conditioned to expect the worst but the simple of act of expecting the best (a miracle) can be enough to turn around the lives of people for the better.
John has a unique way of communicating his message. For the past 21 years he has been handing out a small white card to just about everyone he meets. The card has just three words written on it: “Expect a Miracle”
Last Christmas marked the 21st anniversary of his crusade. He estimates he has handed out almost 70,000 cards.

John and wife, Judy were awarded the International Humanitarian Award from the prestigious Parker Seminars of Dallas, Texas USA last year. Judy is also a chiropractor and the Hinwoods live at Casuarina Beach near the NSW/Queensland border.
“I have witnessed great changes in people after they receive this card. The words alone put people in a state of expecting the best and they start to notice small miracles such as their baby smiling or a friendly gesture by a complete stranger,” said John.
“It has been scientifically proven that the power of intention can and does change lives. The key is to have good and big intentions. Everyone should expect a miracle every day.”
The Australian edition of John’s book, You Can Expect A Miracle has just been released. In it are chronicled extraordinary, believe-it-or-not miracles that those who have received his cards have experienced. The book was released in the United States in September and is receiving rave reviews on Amazon.com
John is a great example of the power of miracles. He was a bad stutterer and also suffered from dyslexia as a child he and his parents were told by school guidance officers that the best he should aspire to was a job as a postal clerk. He overcame his learning difficulties, won a scholarship to study physical education at Sydney Teachers’ College, completed a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree and went on to establish one of Australia’s most successful chiropractic practices.
In his personal life he and Judy adopted three older illiterate and emotionally damaged children from Chile in 1985. The children are all in 30s now and leading wonderful lives. In 1998 the Hinwoods returned to Chile and helped their kids find their biological family including their separated parents.
For eight years he was President of the Australian Spinal Research Foundation, and is a Fellow of the International College of Chiropractors, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Chiropractors and a Fellow of The Australian Institute of Management, one of few health professionals to gain the distinction. He has had papers published academic journals and was once captain/coach of the Danish National Rugby Team.
The 62-year-old’s crusade to change peoples’ lives comes from his many observations through his practice and mentoring and coaching business that people go through life expecting the worst, create what they believe and miss out on wonderful opportunities.

Dr Hinwood’s own experience with miracles include a dramatic escape from a gun pointing hijacker in the Congo and weeks later from a freak blizzard near the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.
Types of Exercise to Release Endorphins
The best type of exercise for improving your mood is cardiovascular exercises and aerobics. This is because vigorous exercise helps to release the chemicals necessary for the mood-raising high. Yoga and Pilates are also great as it reduces tension and stress while improving the mood. It focuses on stretching, breathing, and motion that release negative emotions in the body.
How long do you need to Exercise to Feel the Benefit?
Even if you only exercise for a short period of time, your mood will be improved. Just ten minutes of moderate exercise is enough to improve your mood, your vigour and also decrease fatigue. However, to obtain all the benefits from exercise, not just the mood improving aspects, you should do at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise every day.

Australia’s Miracle Man Celebrates 21 years
Author: Dr. John Hinwood
Media Release
18 November 2008
Chiropractor Dr John Hinwood has been giving out a small white card to almost everyone he has met over the last 21 years.
This Christmas he celebrates 21st anniversary of his crusade and he estimates he has personally handed out almost 60,000 cards. The cards have just three words written on them: “Expect a Miracle”
Dr Hinwood is about to the release an Australian edition of his book, You Can Expect A Miracle in which he chronicles real life miracles and gives readers 13 tips for creating a miracle in their own lives. The book was released in the US in September and receiving rave reviews on Amazon.com
The 62-year-old’s crusade to change people’s lives is grounded in the belief that that too many people go through life expecting the worst and miss so many brilliant positive and healing opportunities.
In his chiropractic practice and personal development coaching and mentoring business, Dr Hinwood has found that when people expect something good there’s a fair chance that they’ll get it.
He knows it works because he’s had personal experiences of miracles happening.
“In 1972 we were hijacked in the Congo at gun point and a miracle kept us alive. Several weeks later, nearing the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro we were trapped in a freak blizzard wearing only light clothing. Instead of being frozen to death, a miracle event saved us until the blizzard passed”, he says.
Dr Hinwood says he has heard of and seen thousands of miracles. “It’s amazing. Once you start to champion something, you become a magnet for it. People find you just to share the miracles that have happened to them”.
Dr Hinwood is a regular presenter on the international speaking circuit.
